Emergency Planning
Emergency Preparedness: Where to begin...? What should I work on first?
If the thought of preparing for an emergency seems overwhelming and you're not sure where to start, you've come to the right place. The list below is a great place to start:
Be Informed! Sign-up for Sacramento Alert It's free.
Prepare a 5-Day Kit for each family member. Be prepared to EVACUATE quickly!
Note: For those with limited mobility, you may want to consider sheltering in place.
Prepare a Family Emergency Plan. Create a communication plan for how you will contact family members before and after an emergency event.
Prepare your "short term" (3 month) food and water storage. Be prepared for life's unexpected disruptions, such as a long term injury or illness, unemployment, food shortages at grocery stores, etc.
Prepare for an alternative cooking method. Be prepared to cook your food and boil water when your normal cooking method is disrupted.
Prepare your "long term" (1 year) food storage. Be prepared, as our Latter-day Prophets have counseled us to be!
If you can, prepare for power outages. Be prepared during power outages. Keep the food in your refrigerator/freezer from spoiling, and your cell phones charged!
Now, this is quite a list, but do not despair. You don't have to do it all at once. The first three items are priorities for every member!
Remember what the Lord has said about learning by precept upon precept, line upon line. Emergency preparedness is like that too. Accomplish one thing at a time and eventually you'll feel - and you'll know - that you are prepared enough. ...when ye are prepared "enough", ye shall not fear.

Preparing Your Home for an Emergency
When we strive to organize ourselves and prepare ”every needful thing,” we'll be blessed with peace of mind (Doctrine and Covenants 109:8).
President Spencer W. Kimball taught that we must be “anxiously engaged in a positive program of preparation.” It is not enough to hope for the best; we must prepare for it.
He explained, “The Lord will not translate one’s good hopes and desires and intentions into works. Each of us must do that for himself” (The Miracle of Forgiveness [1969], 8).
