Floods & Localized Flooding

Floods and localized, stormwater flooding occurs throughout the County. Urban storm drainpipes and pump station have a finite capacity. When rainfall or snow melt exceeds this capacity, or the system is clogged, water accumulates in the street until it reaches a level of overland release. This type of flooding may occur when intense storms occur over areas of development or snow melt and runoff exceeds a dams capacity.

In addition to flooding, damage during heavy flooding and storms includes pavement deterioration, washouts, mudslides, debris areas, and downed trees. The frequency and type of damage or flooding that occurs varies from year to year, depending on the quantity of runoff.
